Generation Keyboard: The War on Communication

The younger generation has grown up with at their fingertips/instant technology, and it is an integral part of their daily lives. They communicate through social media, email, text messaging, and other digital platforms, which has decreased face-to-face interaction. This lack of in-person communication can lead to difficulties expressing emotions and developing social skills. Additionally, it may lead to problems with social isolation and addiction to screen time. It is crucial to find a balance between using technology as a tool for communication and maintaining meaningful relationships through face-to-face interactions.

For athletes, overreliance on keyboard communication can result in a lack of clarity and understanding of their coach's feedback and expectations. Misinterpretations of tone, intent, and meaning can occur in digital communication, leading to misunderstandings and a breakdown of trust between the athlete and coach. Additionally, keyboard communication may make it difficult for athletes to develop critical social skills, such as active listening and conflict resolution, essential for successful teamwork. Face-to-face communication provides athletes with the opportunity to share ideas and feedback in a more nuanced way, build more meaningful relationships with their coaches and teammates, and develop important interpersonal skills needed for success both on and off the court.

Face-to-face communication plays a critical role in personal development, as it helps individuals build necessary social skills, develop empathy, and form emotional connections with others. Social skills like active listening, interpreting body language, and expressing oneself are all developed through face-to-face communication, which is essential for healthy relationships in personal and professional settings. Additionally, face-to-face communication allows individuals to practice empathy by observing the emotions and reactions of others in real time, which fosters greater understanding and kindness. The declining use of face-to-face communication has the potential to stunt personal growth and limit individuals' ability to form the types of interpersonal connections that lead to greater fulfillment, success, and happiness.

The Bible places great importance on community and fellowship. The early Christian church was built around community, with believers coming together to worship, learn, and support one another. Here are a few examples of what the Bible says about community and fellowship:

  1. Acts 2:42-47 describes the early Christian community, where believers shared everything and came together to worship and support one another.

  2. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages believers to gather to encourage one another and grow in their faith.

  3. 1 John 1:7 emphasizes the importance of fellowship in the Christian faith and suggests believers can support one another in their faith journey.

Young athletes should prioritize in-person communication for stronger relationships and social skills. Face-to-face interactions help build trust, empathy, and active listening skills, which can aid in the development of strong team bonds. Excessive use of technology can lead to isolation and negatively affect mental health. Therefore, young athletes need to seek opportunities for in-person communication and interaction with their teammates to strengthen their social bonds and support each other's emotional well-being.
